Introduction
Can Internet become a
modern form of Encyclopaedia ? A comprehensive virtual book,
permanently adaptable, open to anyone, in which hypertext links
would be like innumerable cross references?
Should that occur, let's
bet that the site we propose will carry out throughout the Web a
significant lighting upon the cultural relationship between
Sweden and France at the XVIIIth century and nowadays.
Thus, the project has been
set under the aegis of Karl Kristopher Gjörwell (1731-1811), a
librarian and an essential figure of the intellectual life in
Stockholm during Gustav III's reign. Gjörwell was regularly in
touch with French writers and booksellers of that time and he
strongly helped spreading out the french culture at the court of
Sweden. He also directed many publications in Swedish and
French. His particular role in this field naturally induces us
to giving his name to this project.
